Literal is the publishing imprint for Studio Nicolas/Christian Nicolas. The primary interest is in issues related to urban space, infrastructure, and personal projects.
Uneasy Engagement, Fall 2023, explores the inherent tension between mismatched systems sharing the same space, in this case street trees and utility infrastructure in the urban streetscape of Eastern Queens, NY. The accompanying follow up, Uneasy Engagement Stereoscopic Supplement, Spring 2025, ads more depth with stereoscopic anaglyphs. A new book, Residential (working title, mid 2026), meticulously charts the slow progress and transformation in home building in the same neighborhoods.
Literal is facilitating several artists in producing their publications, and in addition represents other self-published works in the United States.
